What is Poi?

Poi is a performance art employing a ball or balls suspended from a length of flexible material held in the hand and swung in circular patterns. Poi originates from the traditional performing arts of the Māori people of New Zealand, and has since developed many forms enjoyed worldwide as a hobby, exercise, or performance art alongside juggling and other forms of object manipulation.

Playing with Poi is more than just a beautiful art. When I first started I didn't realize there were so many benefits to Poi.

With time, as I got more advanced, and my training routine became more intense, I noticed it worked my body more and more. Before I knew it, my muscles were toned, and I was feeling healthier. It was round about this time that I decided to look into the benefits.

I found that Poi was used, many years ago, by the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand to increase their flexibility and strength in their hands and arms as well as improving coordination. Well, it turns out there were many more advantages that modern science revealed and we are still discovering more!

The Peace Poi Project

A project by Fire Desire to uplift and develop the Youth through the many benefits of Poi. In Modern times our children all miss out on essential development as youths. When we were younger we climbed trees and played outside we developed our minds and bodies. Today children are sitting at home playing video games and watching cartoons not learning these vital skills. On the other side of the scale we have the poverty stuck children that have nothing not even basic access to education. These children could also benefit greatly from poi and its benefits.
